Lawyer: The Ban on Performing KoesPlus® Songs Only Applies to TKoes
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -- The legal representative of the legendary band Koes Plus, Singgih Tomi Gumilang, stated that the prohibition on performing Koes Plus songs only applies to the band T Koes. Other bands are allowed to perform as long as they have good manners and ask for permission.
“So the emphasis is on the band T Koes. Other preservation bands who want to perform Koes Plus' legendary songs are allowed to do so as long as they maintain proper etiquette. The Koes Plus family will certainly allow it. So this is specifically for T Koes,” Singgih said when contacted on Sunday (September 24).
The Koes Plus family previously issued a statement prohibiting the T Koes band from performing Koes Plus songs, stating that this decision serves as a lesson for all parties involved.
This was conveyed directly by the children of Koes Plus personnel, namely Sari Koeswoyo representing the family of Yok Koeswoyo, Damon Koeswoyo representing the family of the late Tonny Koeswoyo, David Koeswoyo representing the family of the late Yon Koeswoyo, and Rico representing the family of Murry in a video uploaded to the TikTok account @official. damonkoeswoyo.
In the video, they announced that the band T Koes is not permitted to perform the works of the Koes Plus family.
"Effective today [September 22, 2023], the Koes Plus family prohibits and does not grant permission to the band T Koes to perform the works of the Koes Plus family and anything related to musical activities and/or in any form, whether commercial or non-commercial," said Sari Koeswoyo, representing the Yok Koeswoyo family, in a video uploaded on Friday (9/22).
Singgih added that the family has its own reasons for making this decision. He also emphasized that this decision is not merely based on material reasons but stems from the family's anger toward the band.
“It's not just about royalties; it's more than just money. The situation is like an iceberg—the anger has been building up,” said Singgih.
Singgih added that the Koes Plus family would discuss this controversy at a press conference on Friday (9/29). There, they promised to reveal the whole story, including the sanctions imposed on T Koes if they violated the agreement. “So they agreed to schedule it for next week,” said Singgih.
The members of the band T Koes actually have no connection whatsoever with the Koes Plus family, despite bearing the name ‘Koes’.
However, the band, which consists of three brothers, Fajaru Al Azhari, Galifa Al Baladi, and Ji Qory Al Ghifari, as well as their father Agusta Dwi Susanto Marzall, focuses on performing Koes Plus songs.
According to various sources, Agusta is a big fan of Koes Plus, so the ‘T’ in the band's name, T Koes, stands for Tonny Koeswoyo, the leader of Koes Plus.
